What size tank will you be getting?  Any type of tank you are thinking of setting up (such as a community peaceful tank, aggressive tank, live planted tank, etc...)?

Basics are tank, hood, filter, heater and a thermometer.  Then you will need some gravel and decorations.  Testing usually ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH are the most important ones.

BORINIC (6/5/2009)
I'm new to the hobby and i would like if somebody tell me all the equipment that i need, as well as the type of test the i have do to the water

Just my low tech approach:

1) tank

2) peat moss  ($10 a "bale")

3) play sand  ($3-5 for a 50 pound bag)

4) pc select  ($8 for a 50 pound bag)

    alternate aquarium gravel

5) 2 watts per gallon 5500-6500k lights.  smaller tanks use  pig tails.  4' tanks simple 2 tube utility fixtures.

6) (10g tank) 4-6 bunches of anacharis, 4 vals, 4 small potted types, a single amazon sword centerpiece.

Setup:

1) add 1" of peat moss, add water to top of peat

2) add 1" of play sand add water to top of sand

3) add 1" pc select (or gravel) add water to top of that.

plant plants.

place dish in tank add water to top of tank runing water over dish.

add lights turn on 10-20 hours per day

wait 1 week

add male platy.

wait one week with no food being added.

add female platy or two and start feeding 1 flake per day.

as long as you get fish that do not attack the plants that method will work fine.  And you can use other fish by just adding one the first week, then stocking up the tank after that week.

For water changes just replace the water the evaporates.

Hopefully that will give you some ideas.  The idea is to get the plants in control right from the start.

Opps!!!!!!!!!!!!

lighting as posted 10-20 hours per day

and I can't edit.

Should be 10-12 hours.

And if you get cloudiness or algae, kill the lights for a few days then resume with less light duration and less feeding.
