Hmm...have to consider trauma - running into something or trying to wedge or getting stuck....or possibly a secondary bacterial infection.  Tumors occuring symmetrically on both sides and simutaneously seem further down the list of possibilities.

Are there any vets or fish stores in your area that have the capability/willingness to do fish necropsy?  Might want to investigate in case a need arises in the future.
