My male crosshatch trigger has been acting weird the last couple days and the wife noticed a lump on him.Don't really know if it is anything but i would like to find out.It is not huge.Just protruding a little and it is right behind his eye above his fin on the side right at the top by his spine. Is looks to be the size of a quarter and only looks like it sticks out maybe 1,16".And is is barly noticable but we can see it.Any Ideas.Should i maybe treat with a medication. Also it is a 210 gallon tank.Could it be a tumor or maybe a swollen organ.

Welcome to the MarineDepot.com forums.

Can you post a picture of the lumps?

What are your water parameters?

What are you feeding your trigger?

What else is in this tank?

How long has the tank been set up?

Any recent additions to the tank - rock, fish, inverts....?

How is the trigger eating?  Is the trigger breathing hard or fast?

What do you mean by the trigger has been acting "weird"?

Again, welcome to the forums?

A picture i can't get a good one. They look like 2 quarter size mosquito bites on each side.Just pokine out a little not abrasians or any discoloration of the skin.

Water parameters are all perfect except nitrate is 50 to 100 ppm.I am getting a nitrate reactore soon. And phosphates are at 5ppm.But it is a fowlr. And the salinity is run at 1.20.

Feeding.A mix of krill,squid,ocean perch,scallops,clams,shrimp,trigger formula,angel formula,mysis,brine all soaked in selcon,vitamin c,zoa and garlic and sprilina powder.

Other tankmates are other triggers puffers a tang and 2 lions.

Tank has been set up since november of 2007.

Rescent additions are a large 12 inch lion and a 13 inch puffer that i rescued. They both stay to themselves.

He has not ate in 3 days but i put him in the sump today so i can watch him better and feed him without the other fish bothering him and was able to get him to eat a whole fresh shrimp. But he would only eat it with me pretty much forcing it into him mouth. And he seems to be breathing a little heaver than normal but not super bad.

As for acting weird. He does not want to come out at all.Hiding in a rock or a edge of the tank and not eating.

I do have a small fluke problem that i just noticed and plan i getting prazi today to treat.I just did a 60 gallon water change last night and super cleaned the filter system and added new carbon. All other fish seem to be fine other than the floke problem.

Could be an abscess or reaction to ?fllukes?

What are your exact water parameters - after being in the hobby for 17+ years you would be amazed at what parameters are reported as perfect or normal.

Feeding.A mix of krill,squid,ocean perch,scallops,clams,shrimp,trigger formula,angel formula,mysis,brine all soaked in selcon,vitamin c,zoa and garlic and sprilina powder.

Sounds like a good well balanced diet !

How big are these guys??

Were these or others quarantined before putting in display tank?

Could be fluke infestation??  Might consider doing a dip to see if you can gain a temporary relief....placing him back in the display tank will cause reinfestation if there is a fluke problem.

Flukes cause stress.  New additions can cause stress - regardless if there is witnessed aggression, these fish may be from different oceans....  Stress weakens immune systems and leaves a fish vulnerable to opportunistic pathogens.  Stress can cause anorexia as well.

Sorry to hear of your loss.....believe me I have been in your shoes more than once.

Any chance of doing a necropsy or skin scraping of the swollen areas?

Do not freeze your fish - refrigerate it and find a vet, or another hobbyist that can help/teach you how to do this.  This will help you identify the cause of the problem and if your other fish become inflicted, you may be able to correctly treat the problem.

Where are you located?

well i tried to do a necropsy myself and i think it was either a tumor or some type of internal bleeding. On both spots on the side of his head were two small patches of colleted blood that looked like what a humun tumor would look like.Or from what i have seen.other than that everything else in there looked normal or what i can for see as normal.
