Hi I just dveloped ich in my 90 gal. tank. I removed my 6 fish and put them in a 20 gal. quarentine tank. I am using coppersafe and was wondering how many times I have to put the medication in. The bottle said to put in 5ml for every 4 gallons so i did that. Do I have to do it again or is that the only time I have t o add it?

Thanks in advance

Kevin,

I do not use Coppersafe - "stabilized form of chelated copper".   Follow the directions on the bottle and make sure to test the copper levels with the appropriate test kit.  There are two type of copper on the market - chelated and nonchelated.  If you use the wrong test kit, you will get inaccurate levels which could lead to toxicity or subtherapeutic levels.

I would recommend using SeaChem Cupramine - nonchelated.  It is easy to dose and is safe to use on many of the scaleless fish.  I have used it for 15 years.

Best of luck.

How big were all of these fish that you put in the 20 gallon quarantine tank?

What type of filtration and water movement?

What are your water parameters?

From what I've been told, lions can't handle copper treatments. That you have to treat them the same as invertebrates.

Seachem cupramine is safe to use on scaleless fish like puffers, lionfish..  I have used it for years on puffers and have even treated a tank with epaulette sharks.  These fish, especially the sharks, may become anorexic with/during the copper treatment but will go back on feeds once treated and copper removed.

The key is to follow the directions on the bottle and to start treatment before it is too late.  Often times people will blame the copper for killing the fish when in reality, the infestation is so severe, the fish succumbs to the parasite before the copper can work.
