Hi Guys I have just recently bought a juvenile emperor angel and I am having problems feeding it, I have a tank that is about 430 litters, and is well stocked with live rock and other fish, at the moment I am feeding it mysis but it is not taking it every time I put the feed in the tank it disappears behind the rocks and all the other fish seem to polish it off, it is eating the algae on the rocks but seems to be very shy, I also was to told to try the garlic guard but had no success, I have had the fish for two weeks now and don’t want to lose it.

Please can anyone help?

Thanks

If the fish is not being molested by any other mates and is an otherwise healthy specimen, it should be taking to prepared foods by now. How large is the angel and what else is in the tank? Do you see the fish picking at rocks/glass. Angels derive a good deal of nourishment from algal film and diatoms so if it's grazing that's a plus. I would offer it some nori on a clip, finely minced mussell and clam, plankton, perhaps some small pellet food. If the fish is very tiny, it may not adapt well. A specimen in the 3-4 inch range is usually a good candidate for captivity. Another consideration is water quality. Many angels are sensitive to parameters that are out of whack. Post your nitrates and pH.

it is about 4 inches, i have a powder blue yellow tang regal tang, a chromi, a cardinal and a lemon peal, it grases quit alot on the rock but when food goes in it hides behind the rocks, i have also tried live food but the rest seem to finish it, i do regular water changes every week so i am on top of that. and the saline is between 1020-1024, i was told this is ok

Ok i have tested my water today i have a very slight trace of nitrate and nitrite but nothing to be concened about the ph level is reading at 8.2 and the salinity is at 1.024 so there are no problems there, i will turn of the pumps tonight when i feed to see if that helps.

thanks for the replies

I was wondering what the actual level of your nitrite is? It sounds like your tank is pretty well established with plenty of biological filtration. You really shouldn't see any reading on the nitrite scale. Nitrates I can understand. It may be that the other inhabitants have become acclimated to the low nitrite level and the new Emperor is stressed. I believe that the Centropyge sp. ( lemonpeel) are not as sensitive as the Pomacanthus sp. (emperor). This might not be the fact but it's something worth considering.

That's great news! I would still use the garlic gaurd periodically the help build and maintain his immune system. Can't hurt.
