I use a 23 watts energy saving light (rated 100 watts day light) with a clamp on reflector all from Home Depot for around $15 on my refugium tank, I have LR, LS and macro Algae, I know some people use PC or VHO on their refugium tank, but my Macro Algae is growing like crazy on 12 hrs. timer, that is good enough for me.

As DC mentioned that probably should be enough assuming the refugium isn't too deep. I have lit refugiums with a variety of lights (PC, metal halide, normal flo.) generally with no problems.
