Hi Folks,

Well, the main thrust of today's activities, provided my serious hurting and aching body permits it, will be to get set up to try to get some movies of Diodogorgia feeding in my flow chamber using my microscope so I can actually see prey/food capture by the polyps and (I hope) see if it matches my hypothesis of feeding.

On the likely other hand, if the body doesn't permit it, well, there are always references to read.

Hi,

You know, it IS cool.  It is really WAY cool.  This work is something that nobody has ever done with gorgonians - to actually see how they feed!!!  It is neat in another way, too.  I am making real progress, I think, on some of the problems regarding the husbandry of such animals (= non-symbiotic soft corals; gorgonians specifically, but also including things such as Dendronephthya).

I am using these observations to test my hypothesis about feeding in these animals, but another cool part of it is that even if the observations don't support my ideas, they are still new data and will provide absolutely new information.  Truly a win-win situation!!!

Thanks a lot, truly, for the kind sentiments.  The aches... are never ending and they are progressively worsening; on many days it is seriously difficult to get through the day.

Cheers, Ron

Thanks for your work, Ron! I don't know what ails you, but I spent ten years after a back injury dealing with chronic pain. Just a couple of months ago I came to find out that, though the back injury was the trigger, the constant pain was the result of a nutritional deficiency. A few days after taking coenzyme Q10 supplements and the aches in various parts of my body started going away. Two weeks later and my back was fine. I could still feel tightnesses, but no nagging pain involved.

It's one instance for me, but if it's not something you've considered....

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info, maybe I will give it a try.

My pain problem "lit up" initially about 10 years ago and is progressive, getting seriously worse, sometimes by the day.  It is severe osteoarthritis.  X-rays and MRIs show that my spine is deciding to get back at me for being an "invertebrate" zoologist, and wants to make sure that adjective apt.  I have a LOT of vertebral degeneration along with disk disintigration. That causes a lot of neural problems (pinched nerves, etc).  Then virtually every other joint is following suit.

I think the cause of this was a combination of my particular physiology (whatever that is) and a lot of extended decompression diving when I was actively working in the field.  Bottom line, a lot of barotrauma for the joints, and now, and forever anon, I pay for it.

On top of that, a lot of pain meds (many of the opiates) don't seem to work.  So, somedays I get "cranky" from the pain.

Others, I just try to work through it with some degree of humor.

Cheers, Ron

I think the best argument for the fact of evolution is that an intelligent designer would have done a better job on us (and other animals, too, of course). With evolution, we're stuck with the quirks of history and just making do.

My Xrays didn't show the degenerative bone problems like you're talking about (which led my doctor to not pay much attention to my pain), but my other symptoms sound pretty similar to what you describe and the characteristic symptoms of this deficiency. Intense joint pain, right in the joints, at areas of injury. Despite whatever's going on with the body, the joint pain doesn't go away. I kept trying to go on various exercise regimens so I could lose weight and take strain off the hurting joints in my back. Every single exercise that I tried would end up in a small injury within two weeks and joint pain in that location that would not ever really go away.

Oddly enough, it was my pharmacist that suggested the supplement. I've been on a cholesterol med for a year or so that is known to deplete this enzyme. So, she finally talked me into trying it.

From the reading I've done, which isn't enough yet, CoQ10 is produced naturally in humans up until about age 20, after which we are reliant on dietary intake for our supply. It's particularly important for intercellular energy transfer. And, it's apparently a pretty potent antioxidant.

I'm not a physician, so I certainly can't competently evaluate all of the claims of this enzyme's properties, but I do know that it's made my day-to-day living much easier to bear and actually has me starting to work on a new exercise regime.

So, for what it's worth....
