I was flipping through a new catalog today and noticed that Aquarium Products is marketing a clove oil product called Euthanase.
Steven Pro, yeah that is my real name.

| Steve, Thanks for sharing. I haven't used clove oil for anesthesia or euthanasia. I have heard many accounts of fish that "act neurologic" or "never are themselves" after using clove oil for anesthesia. At a recent fish health conference at NCSU, Drs Lewbart, Harms and Swanson, discussed this and have had similar experiences. It seems that the clove oil has a smaller margin of error with dosing than MS 222 (finquel) and that the oil can actually "coat" the gills making oxygenation difficult and can lead to hypoxia (condition of lack of oxygen).....thus causing injury to the brain/tissues. So for anesthesia, at this point I will continue to use MS 222. I will be interested in hearing how this product works for hobbyists.

Judging from the name and according to the manufacturers product description, the product seems exclusively designed for humane disposing of fish. Nothing of the label suggests it be used for anesthesia.
Don't count your gobies before they've metamorphosized.

I hadn't had a chance to check the product out but I too thought from the name that it could be used for euthanasia......many hobbyists do use clove oil for anesthesia so this may be used inadvertantly - yikes!
