G'day from Oz!

I need some help identifying and attacking a red algae problem I am having. (damn I cant seem to upload the picture I had)

Since reading lots about feeding corals and increasing feeding in general I have had subsequent increased growth in a red algae that is starting to take over.

My tank is a 4x2x18' reef with 2 250MH's, downdraft skimmer, sump, calcium reactor, rowaphos in a kent reactor, and tunze 6000 stream with controller. It has 3 chromis, a rabbit fish, lawnmower blenny, clown fish, 3 turbo snails and coral banded shrimp.

I think I have good flow,my temperature is under control and the local FS tests my water which is of good quality.

What is this algae and what can I do to eradicate it, especially with my desire to finally feed my previously starving corals!

Thanks for your help

Can you describe the algae a little more. Is it fuzzy, film like, hair, etc.

Thanks.

Its filamentous like. Grows in big clumps that I can pull off the rocks, sometimes these clumps can be 3 or 4 inches squared. The filaments have little fonds or branches, a little like caulerpa, but not quite as feather-like in formation. It grows very thick and very long.

Still cant upload the picture which would really help.

Here are some images. (hooray, I'm proud of myself )
The tank images are a few months ago, but you can already see large clumps of this stuff. It is worse now.
Bye the way, how do most people keep their gravel clean. Notice mine is quite discoloured.

Thanks

Have you had some of the Bali maricultured corals come through your system?

Unfortunately, I leave for the field tomorrow morning but want to comment extensively on this thread. Keep it bumped. I may find some spare time before I return on Aug 10, but please bump the thread for me.

Eric,

I would really appreciate your input so thanks, I'm happy to wait as long as it takes.

The corals and live rock are from Australia's Northern Territory I believe or so my well reputed FS says.

I'm not sure what bumping is, I'm new to this forum stuff (as you could tell by how difficult I found posting pictures). Could anyone else help me with that?

i had what i believe was the same algae in my tank. once i added a Scribbled Rabbit fish it ate it all. maybe it is not the same algae but i had gotten some aquacultured frags previous. not sure where they were from.
