I have a 4" Arothron diadematus in my 125 gallon tank for almost a year now. I had him at one point with a Porcupine Puffer but that did not work out because the Porcupine Puffer hurt him one day several times. He was also with a 2" picasso trigger who also started attacking him, so I had to move him out too to my 220. The panda is a very shy fish and lives well with a Teardrop Butterfly and Idol at the moment. I will be moving the Idol out of the tank soon and I was wondering if any other puffer would do well with my Panda Puffer. He is extremely passive and will not do well with any sort of aggression. Would any other Arothron be suitable tankmate for him? I would love one of those black Arothron spp. but want to make sure they would be fine together.

The black morph of the arothron nigropunctatus (Solomon Islands) is not as hardy as the other arothrons.  It will be a "hit or miss" if the two will get along.  The black morphs are not as aggressive as some so it may work but make sure to quarantine the new one first to avoid introducing pathogens and have a back up plan if aggression occurs.

Rabbitfish are good tank mates with puffers.

Best of luck.

Is it basically a hit or miss with any of the arothron species? Or could you recommend one that is more likely to get along then the others?

I forgot to mention that the only backup plan would be to move him over to my 220 tank that is housing my Porcupine Puffer. But the problem is the Porcupine has shown a disliking for the Panda even though they apparently lived together fine for about a year. If the Panda and "black morph arothron" happen to not work out, and I have to move the black morph to the porcupine's tank, would they fight also or would they be fine together most likely? (the porcupine was fine with the butterfly, trigger, and idol, just seems the panda was too passive for him)

ok strike that. im not going to chance another assertive/aggressive fish with the Panda. Would smaller active fish like Banggai Cardinalfish or Midas Blennies be appropriate? Or would the panda eat them?

I do not think that a 'passive' panda puffer would eat or chase a blenny or cardinal fish.  A rabbitfish would be a good passive addition.  They are fairly hardy and are great at keeping glass and rock clean as they pick on algae.

Best of luck.
