the tank will be up and running with only the skylight above unless they are working right by the tank as when the drywall goes on and drywall dust is flying everywhere. then i will cover the tank with the blue plastic. since there will be no sump until after the house is complete it should be fairly easy to completely cover the tank.
Drew, it will still be many months until the tank is fully populated with a sump, and all. don't concede yet.
by the time the tank is complete the house will be too and we will have a guest room.
the holes in the bottom of the tank are for the closed loop system.

| Carl This thread is going to be great! I'll let you make all the mistakes and then seek your advice, when we bulid ours in AZ. . I have got you bookmarked so I can keep up on this thread. Looks like you will not be coming up here too much till you are done. To bad it is the best weather yet. When you are ready to start getting some corals I have lots of frags for you. It truly is great when our tank dreams come true . Victoria

Victoria, we still hope to make it up for some hiking this summer. thanks for the frag offer. i will need some for sure. i am trying to limit my corals to SPS mostly but i have a couple of nice LPS corals too, bubble, frogspawn, torch, hammer. i am going to keep the Xenia's, mushrooms, and the like out of the new tank. i may still have one of my other tanks for those. Xenia's are kind of taking over my 260 right now.

[the holes in the bottom of the tank are for the closed loop system. Carl: I would like to know more about this closed loop system. Isn't the bottom of the tank where the sand & LR goes? I thought that these CL systems were set up on the upper part of the back of tanks? Guess that I am just confused & can't picture this type of system? I also am looking forward to following this thread. Steve

the plumbing for the closed loops indeed comes through the bottom of the tank, the returns will come up through the sand and exit a few inches above the sand. the closed loops will be two oceansmotions.com four ways. having the plumbing under the tank the will have less head loss and easier plumbing, hence more flow from the same pump. i will have the sump returns around the top of the tank but under the top of the tank. another reason not to have the closed loops return over the top of the tank is i don't want to block any more light from the skylight than necessary. also to do maintenance on the tank i will have to lie across the top of the tank and that would be more difficult to lay a piece of padded plywood across the tank to work inside.
check out the oceansmotions.com site to learn more about the variable flow you get from them.

it's been months and a lot has been going on with the house but not much with the tank. we have been too busy with the other aspects of the house but I am just about ready to to get going agin with installing some plumbing.
the stand is 2" heavy wall tubing with a power coat and then Rhino liner sprayed on. no rust for me. we didn't Rhino line the I beams under the tank in the garage though.

the tank has 5 2" overflows, two internal and 3 external. i wanted an overflow at the far end of the tank away from the external overflow.

i plan to have the rock stacked on these acrylic poles. the block will be buried under the sand. also we drilled 2" holes in lots of rock to place over the closed loop returns to hide them.

i have a few pounds of sand, mostly sugar fine.

we did manage to get the tank on the stand.

two frag tanks for eventual set up in the garage under the tank.

not that it really matters but the second frag tank picture was supposed to be the boxes of sand.

i am following the recommendations of Ron Shimek who BTW has a great article along with one by Anthony Calfo also on deep sand beds in the current issue of Coral Magazine.
we talk about sizes etc. here.
