Hi Kelly,

Since I am a newbie I just wanted to confirm all the I have read here. I have had marine ich in my tank previously and I recently I have taken over my tank (from techs). Last week I noticed on my dog face puffer's fin white sprinkles that has not gone away. I believe this is ich I tried to photograph I do have a few pics but nothing great.

So I have just been notified that my QT tank is on B/O and will not be send until next week. However my tank is FO with no LR. I added 4 1/2 caps of Cupramine to my 125g tank. My puffer freaked out and swam all over the place and then didnt eat the next day and hid, then no fish ate the day after and everybody hid. Last couple of days everybody is eating well and today I did a 25g water change with R/O water and the salinity is at 1.020.

My question is when can I change out more water to bring the salinity down I was thinking another 25g every couple of days until I get it down to 1.010 ? Not sure if I should add more cupramine ?

I bought beta glucan 200mg capsules and sprinkle it over the food and add 2 drops of garlic extreme and soak in zoe in the fridge. When I feed its soupy I am not sure if they are getting the beta glucan ?

Am I doing this right ?

Is there substrate in this tank?  What is your pH?

What size are these spots on the fins?  Have they been there more than a week?  What size are they - larger than salt granules?  Any other fish with spots?

How many ml are in a capful ? I always prefer to use a syringe to measure medications precisely.

My puffer freaked out and swam all over the place and then didnt eat the next day and hid, then no fish ate the day after and everybody hid. Last couple of days everybody is eating well and today I did a 25g water change with R/O water and the salinity is at 1.020.

What is your copper level - must monitor daily - use SeaChem or Salifert copper test kit.  Copper can cause temporary anorexia.

My question is when can I change out more water to bring the salinity down I was thinking another 25g every couple of days until I get it down to 1.010 ? Not sure if I should add more cupramine ?

You can treat ich with either hyposalinity or copper but not both.  With either treatment you must monitor the pH, ammonia and nitrite daily.  What type of filtration are you using in this tank?

Another method could be to dissolve the beta glucan in a small amount of water and then add it to the food while it is soaking in the fridge.

Hi

Yes I have substrate, my ph is 8.4, ammonia .50 today after water change yesterday of 25g so I just added Prime The spots are the size of salt and only on the puffer. Everyone eating fine the puffer is a pig as usual. The spots have been there for 8 days. The filter system is bio balls in the overflow and a filter sock in the sump and a protein skimmer.

I tested the copper and I am barely getting a reading. I was suppose to add 5ml (1cap) per 10g. I understand that when I add cupramine I will get a false high nitrate reading. I also just read on seachems website:

Q: I've been dosing with Cupramine™ and then I added Product X and everything died. What happened?
A: If Product X is a reducing agent such as ParaGuard™ (or other aldehyde based medications), or if you overdose with a dechlorinator, such as Prime™ then the Cu+2 will be reduced to Cu+. Cu+ is 10 times more toxic than Cu+2.

Q: I'm using Cupramine™ and my ammonia test kit is showing ammonia off the scale. What is going on?
A: Ammonia test kits can not distinguish ammonia from the amine based complex present in Cupramine™ and will therefore give a false high reading for ammonia while using Cupramine™. Our Ammonia Alert™ and MultiTest: Free & Total Ammonia™ test kit do not suffer from this problem as they utilize a gas exchange technology that can distinguish ammonia from amines.

So luckily I added no more cupramine since my initial dose which was less than half of rec. amt.

Now I think its best to just do hyposalinity due to the copper seems to complicated.

I hope my ammonia is a false positive because I would like to change out another 25g of my 125g tank to reduce the salinity again.

Nitrate are less than 10.

Thanks again I feel much better not being on my own.

You have dosed too much - it is one cap (5ml) per 50 gallons = 1 ml per 10 gallons.  You have given 5 times too much initially -could account for the behavior described.

DIRECTIONS: Remove all invertebrates. Turn off UV sterilizer; remove chemical filtration. Use 1 mL (top mark of enclosed dispenser) per 40 L (10.5 gallons*) the first day, wait 48 hours, then repeat for a total dose of 0.5 mg/L (in freshwater, use half dose). Leave at this concentration for 14 days. Do not redose without testing (MultiTest: Copper™). Do not use in conjunction with any other medication. If tank has ever been treated with an ionic copper (e.g. copper chloride, sulfate or citrate), test copper level after initial dosing. Although most fish tolerate Cupramine™ to 0.8 mg/L, it is not advisable to exceed 0.6 mg/L copper. Remove with carbon or CupriSorb™.

As far as a low reading - the substrate is porous so it has probably absorbed it now and this could be dangerous as it can be released if water parameters (pH, etc) fluctuates - could lead to toxicity issues.

Hi,

I did misunderstand the directions and overdosed !! I am very scared what will happen to the fish. I was suppose to put in 2 1/2 caps (full dosage) and I have put in 4 1/2. But for a puffer I should have only put in 1/2 the rec. dosage. I have tested the copper but I am barely getting a reading. Perhaps the water change helped a little bit ?

Today I have added carbon to try and take out the cupramine. i am going to continue with the beta glucan and garlic. I guess this is all I can do ?

I had my old tech that I have kept on as a consultant and come out and check the fish she is not sure if the puffer has ich. She says the few white spots he has on his fins maybe a defect of his fin and looks like it is part of the bone on the fin. There is one lrg spot and several smaller ones but it is only on one fin. she rec. I just keep an eye on all the fishes and see if I see an increase in spots.

She recommended I add the carbon to remove the cupramine. Today all the fish are swimming around and eating well.

I do not know what to do about the substrate I have a deep bed with a plenum.

What test kit are you using?

Can you post a pic of the spots/fin in question?
