| Kelly, I was hoping that you could help me ID this puffer. I think that he is absolutely beautiful. He is shaped like a Valentini, but has completely different markings. A friend (& LFS owner) has had him for over a year and all that she knew about him is that he came from Fiji but has never been able to ID it in any of her books. Do you know what he is?

Thanks, Jen

| commonly known (group name) as a sharpnose puffer or "Toby" http://www.wetwebmedia.com/tobies.htm Yours is likely the Hawaiian spotted puffer, but depending where it was imported from ... it could be one of several similar looking species. FWIW

| Thanks Anthony! I think it is the Canthigaster solandri Fiji specimen. I'll have to compare to the fish in person.

| Jen, Thanks for sharing/posting. Pretty puffer - but then again some say I am impartial to puffers. It is a spotted, false eye, Solander's or ocellated toby puffer aka canthigaster solandri. They "max out" at a little over 4 inches. Hope to see pics of the puffer in your tank soon.

you are very welcome my friend... and be sure to use www.fishbase.org as your final and authorative databse for species info. Once you have nartrowed down genera/species... go to fishbase and see their data. It's the final (and current) word most always.

I have him home in my tank now He seems to be swimming around but a bit shy. He hides in a cave in the LR as I approach the tank. Last night, I had him eating misis that I had in the freezer. I need to go pick up a good variety of food for him to eat. I plan to stop at the grocery store and get some raw shrimp and scallops for him. What would be the best food for him to help keep his teeth in check? Thanks so much! I need to get better pics to share once he is less shy! Jen

| Jen, Congrats on the pufffer - look forward to the pics! Make sure to feed the raw shrimp with the shell on it. I have found whole frozen crabs at the Asian market - the puffers go crazy for them. Squid is another favorite. Try putting/hiding pieces of food in crevices of the live rock so the puffer has to forage and scrape for the food. Best of luck.

Puffer Queen (1/29/2007)

Would you feed a whole raw shrimp to a toby (shell on). I've minced up a few shrimp (shell off) with some tank water in a food processor. He loved it. I was thinking of making up a meaty mix of shrimp / clams / squid. Anything else that should go in? Thanks!

| In the ocean, puffers will ingest shrimp with the shell on. There are nutrients in the shell. Might try scallops & silversides. Recommend adding multivitamins, HUFA to the food as well.
