I walk into a lfs the other day - where i recently purchased a rather large (think 12" large -disk-)gtba. wham nice - got home (it) split and ate in record time (so fast (like 1 day fast) i think i had two to begin with - bought the rock as to not tear the foot and maybe got a bonus). now i have 3 of them little buggers - one split again. nice

Anyway i walk in again, and i see this magnificantly large beautiful anemone. huge - larger that my super large carpet, and the gtba i bought. Nice lta, hosting and everything. The color you ask? White. pure white. I talk to the worker and i tell him its bleached and this and its probably going to die - he says he knows. He said people put them in boxes for a while so the zoolanthe dies and leaves a perfectly white anemone - and - he says its common. i walk out of there head shaking and i cant believe what i just heard. this is seriously sad my friends. this anemone was sooo big and gorgeous i really am having a hard time not buying it. I want to save it - i have to. if its a wild caught - its really probably older than alot of specimines that come rolling in and i cant let it die.

Ok heres my logic. this was recently done. and hopefully is reversable (because its a recent "bleachie"). its 50 dollars, but if i can save it i can chop chop and have some niced sized starter colonies - and it wount die for no reason. i really feel the need to save it - because of its size - i think its important. im going to ask them to feed it and if it responds - i am going to purchase it. i know the implications - they buy a white one and sell a white one so they buy another white one. however, my goal is to be this store's supplier of nems in 6-8 months ..

I am curious to know if putting it in a tank with a 400w mh will cause more harm than good - ie ramp up lighting slowly?? also pe mysid sells fresh water mysid. after all the research ive done ive come up with the following conclusion - fresh water food to salt water fish = bad. however in this case would it be advisable to feed the anemone these particular mysid due to the super high protien rating? and once better switch over to a salt water food?

In the end im not so sure my questions will have any profound basis - he will move where he wants (into and out of the light roaming the tank in his endless search for the perfect spot) and probably should be fed the proper diet of sw mysid or silversides. Just really looking for some input/experiences - no one should feel excluded

your reaction is so natural, so predictable... and so horrible for our hobby and conservation I cannot be anything but blunt with you here.

Please!!!! Do NOT "save" this anemone... and please read our anemone threads on the subject (search this site and wetwebmedia.com for bleached anemone threads via strategic keyword and keyphrase searches): http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic24714-13-1.aspx

"saving" inappropriate species from pet store only serves to KILL more of the species you are trying to save by enourgaing the LFS to buy more of inapproriate species as well as supporting the bad practices (yes, its true... the Asian exporters bleach the anemones via light shock to make the white color).

Worse still... the several or more anemones that must be collected and killed to replace the one you just bought will not longer be living on the reef as reproductive (breeding) members of the community! Preventing hundreds or thousands more anemones from being produced in time.

You could not make a worse decision in buying this white anemone short of flying to the South Pacific and personally killing 3 to 10 more with your bare hands.

I realize you mean well here, but please take this to heart if you are truly a conscientious aquarist.

Forget about winning the battle (let the LFS anemone die or not be bought by you). Lets focus on winning the war (stopping the practice at large with our sensible consumer buying power).

so i guess i have no choice.. it must live and i must chop it 3-10 times or i must purchase a ticket and wait umm man i didnt think it would have such a profound effect. on my honor i will have a closed discussion with the owner (i see him there regularly) and i wount ever buy another white anemone!! its hard tho to see an animal in distress and not do anything for the helpless creature - when you know you can. it may win the war later on, but man it sure is difficult in the short run.. atleast they dont have big beadie eyes starring at you through the glass ...

I very much understand, my friend... we all feel this as empathetic aquarists. But it is the conscientious aquarist in us that is mindful of the species and the industry that prevents us from buying it.

I'd really love to see this LFS friend stop ordering these anemones. There are other better ways/species to make money.

No, it's not easy but yeah, you have to leave it be. I have stopped going to the section of the lfs that still sells 'nems in this area, because it truly makes me cry to see them.
