i plan on having a cryptic tank area above my tank to gravity feed the display tank.
i have some Matala mat from my koi pond that i was considering using. it seems like it would be a good base for the sponges, pods etc to grow on/in.
i have a choice of the various densities. what do you think overall and which one would you use? the black is the most open but still looks like it would provide much purchase area for attachment.

I have some Matala mat from my koi pond It is very fine media, my friend... Choose the lowest density if you are gunning for larger macrofauan such as sponges, fanworms and amphipods Opt for higher density if you want smaller plankters such as copepods and non-filter feeding worms. My vote is for the black/low density FWIW.

thanks Anthony. the black it is. now i need to decide if the 55 gallon tank is enough or i should use the 180. not sure i have room for the 180 but i might. i may keep the 180 for my RBTA farm. i don't imagine i would need a real high flow rate in this tank.
i am going to hear Steve Tyree speak tonight at the holiday party, SCMAS meeting.
if i fill the tank with Matala should i leave room under the mats, maybe build it on a raised frame to be able to siphon out under neath?

the 55 gall is quite spacious here... do save that 180 for BTA farming! For the media mats... trip them short on the sides and bottoms to allow some water to pass by and improve particle suspension/drift ala eductor (sort of...) flying by the sides and undersides. Leave a gap wide enough for your hand to pass by at least
