| If you have a nikon body or any dSLR that accepts a nikon mount (fuji) then for around $100.00 you can get a fantastic little lens. The Nikkor 50mm f1.8 is fast, light and pleasantly sharp, even wide open. This lens is typically recommended for portraiture and does admirably there, but it is also great for photographing fish. Here's a recent shot w/ the 50mm of the newest addition to my tank:

good call bro... and for folks with other brands, a 50mm is definitely one of the top affordable/handy lens sizes to keep on hand. Sigma makes a very fine one too that fits a variety of camera brands. I recall my/our dear friend Daniel Knop (Koralle/Coral magazine, etc) very happily used and recommended it for years.

Yup, in fact, most "prime" lenses will give you contrast and sharpness that matches and sometimes exceeds that of pro zoom glass for less money but you obviously sacrifice the ability to zoom and end up needing more lenses to match the focal range of a zoom. And there are certainly pro primes that ain't anything close to cheap, like canon's 50mm f1.0L USM which runs for well over $2,000.00
