| I resist a lot in purchasing a carpet anemone...I even resisted some amazing yellows and greens that arrived last week in a LFS but I continuously have it on my mind... What you all, and Anthony, think about them...they have their place in a big reef aquarium (1000 ltrs) or they are really aggressive to fishes? I am a fish-lover and I don't want to sacrifice even one small fish for an anemone... but I do like carpets... What do you think ?

I honestly do not think most of them should be collected or imported for the hobby... anywhere. Their natural life span is over 100 years old... their natural reproduction is extremely slow... their recovery from collection off the reef is pitiful... their shipping survival is often dismal... and even if none of that were an issue, they get around a meter in size and have no place in most home aquariums. I think the use of most in the hobby is irresponsible But for folks with very large aquariums (over 1000 liters), if you must use a carpet species, please select haddoni and propagate it after it is established.

There is not a single responsible reason (in my case) to use a Carpet Anemone... I just like it but I resisted because I did my homework and read about it (even in the anemone farm article in C...the Journal)...The reason I posted here was to strengthen my determination not to buy this amazing animal... If noone buys I am sure that the next import will include other anemone species

agreed my friend... they really do belong in the hands of specialists or at least species-only tanks - not for casual or mixed species displays in my opinion.

| I remember about a year or so ago a mini carpet being very very popular.. at one time when they first came out everyone was doubting them and you could get them for little to nothing.. I last heard of some commanding a huge price and being said to be ultra rare... I didn't think much about it but I haven't heard a word about them in the last 6 or 7 months Where they found not to be minature carpets or the people with them placing such a high price they aren't traded anymore? I just wondering if you guys had heard about them or seen them.. I remeber seeing htem a bunch on the RC trading forums.

I remember about a year or so ago a mini carpet being very very popular... I just wondering if you guys had heard about them or seen them.. I believe you're thinking of Stichodactyla tapetum anemones. There's a small variant --doesn't get bigger than a quarter-- that came into the hobby as a hitchhiker on some live rock Gary Majchrzak purchased. He's subsequently raised and sold hundreds of them. The more expensive ones from year ago are believed to be a larger S. tapetum variant, from Korea, that can reach up to about three inches in size. At this time, the larger variant is not commonly available. - Mark

Viper... welcome to Marine Depot You will see a sticky atop my forum here called "Fav links" In that thread my best recommendations are categorized by post (books, URLs, etc)... and it is a growing collection of years. Scroll down in that thread and you will see an entry for "discussions" which has threads on almost every topic you can think of... alphabetical... and yes, with anemone propagation http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic24714-13-1.aspx You'll see carpet propagation there... including haddoni (most carpets in the trade are S. haddoni) Please note that if you make the newbie farmer mistake of propagating it in your display (all coral/anemone propagation really should be done outside of display tanks unless the display is monospecific)... you may well kill every living fish in your tank (see the threads int he link my friend) Please share pics if you proceed with the propagation.
