I have been looking into this topic alot lately and my googling has led me to many articles by Dana Riddle. For the most part they were written in the late 90's early 2000's. Dana wrote that even SE MH bulbs emit quite alot of U.V light and he recommends placing plexi-glass under the bulbs to filter out the U.V. Do you agree? Also, for the most part spectrum is not important whether you use 6500k or 20k as long as you have high intensity and the most PAR that you can, the coral will be fine (as far as lighting goes). Do you agree? This last one actually has me wondering, because from what I have seen in my tank, some corals under 6500k bleached and under 20k recovered, problem is the 6500k has way more PAR than the 20. It makes it seem like when you read some interesting articles by an expert, you think your on your way..then again you hit a wall.

to UV or not UV is a case by case situation pending the specific coral species you keep and likely not to be settled satisfactory in most tanks since most folks have staggeringly unrealistic expectations for coral color for mixing species from such drastically different parts of the reef in one shallow tank.

My best advice is if you focus on mostly shallow water species, then let some UV in. And if you go deep water - then filter with a glass or plastic lens.

it really is an enormous subject and one that cannot even be answered quite accurately while discussing UV alone as an influence on coral coloration. But for practical matters, I do still think that you will be happier with allowiung UV over yellow Poriotes and blue-tipped Acropora while not allowing UV over blue bubble corals and green fox corals, for example.
