| Hi Kelly, I have a foxface in quarantine right now and has been for 2 weeks, I observed him at the lfs for a month before buying him. He has a few pimple like bumps on his back that are concerning me. They are definitely under the skin because when he changes colour the spots still blend in. I haven't treated him at all because he is otherwise healthy, eating fine, no sign of scratching or other distress. But I don't want to put him into my display tank until I know for sure he doesn't have any diseases or parasites. He would be the first fish to be put into the display tank since it has been laying fallow for 8 weeks after a marine velvet incident. Do you know of any problems with pimples? I don't want to stress him by treating him with medications or hyposalinity if he doesn't need it. TIA Marie

| The "pimples" sound like they could be parasites, possibly an internal one that has migrated from the organs of the fish into the flesh, which then the fish's immune system would create an encystment around the parasite in an attempt to wall it off. Once in the flesh, I do not believe there is an effective treatment. Any chance of providing a clear up close photo of the "pimples" on the fish? Chuck

I have tried taking pics but the bumps don't show up at all in the photos.

| Was hoping that with a photo we could get an idea of how large the bumps are, their spacing or numbers present, and if they appear to have been externaly caused or not. Other than being just raised "bumps", are there any other visible signs? anything that might appear to be a small entry wound? any redness? Sorry, just leaves alot to the imagination. But other than that, how is the fish behaving? I realize it is in a QT and may be a bit stressed which is to be expected. Chuck

| Marie, Are the pimples increasing in number or size ? Are you enriching the food with beta glucan or vitamins?

The largest bump is about the size of a grain of salt if it was pushed under the skin (half a grain of salt?). There are at least 10 that I can see on each side, hard to tell because some are quite small and they are very blendy . It's also hard to tell if they are multiplying or not for the same reason, but it's possible. There is no sign of redness or irritation and these bumps don't seem to bother him at allI maybe overly cautious because of past problems, but this fish is not going into my 175g bowfront until i'm absolutely sure of his health I'm feeding him mysis, nori and osi flake food, soaked in garlic and beta glucan

| If the bumps have been on the fish longer than a week or two, then Ich and most other external protozoal parasites could be ruled out. As a best guess on my part, an internal parasitic worm is my best candidate for such bumps, although those bumps could also be a skin reaction to a turbellarian flatworm. As I said, its really just best guesses short of actualy doing a biopsy and putting it under microscopic review. I have included a webpage link that I put together and hope it may reveal more to you than I am able to right now. Am just at a loss as to being able to pin down an exact "bump" identification. Wish I could though. Fish Disease Photo Identification and Treatments Chuck

| Marie, I agree with Chuck. I have seen similar "pimples" on puffers - these were either reactions to parasites, encapsulated worms or self contained/walled off skin infection - bacterial infections (pimples/abscess). If biopsy/culture is not an option, I would recommend treating with hyposalinity and an antibiotic that is absorbed via the skin - maracyn 2. This could rule out/treat parasitic and bacterial infection. I have used both treatments on many rabbitfish, including foxfaces, without adverse reactions. Thanks for sharing. Please keep us updated. Best of luck.

I've finished lowering the specific gravity to 1.009, yesterday and I'm waiting for the maracyn 2 to come in (had to order it). The spots haven't changed and the fish is doing fine
