| we are doing an addition to the house that will contain a greenhouse room for lack of a better description. kalwall.com i can get it in various transmission amouts. 50% light transmission or 30% light transmission. the tank will be in an area where it will recieve light all day. whcih would be better? i want to have both sps and lps corals in this tank. i will also have some minimal lighting for evening viewing but most of the tank including the top will be available for the natural light.

With all the filtering that will go on with the 30% and 50% transmission levels. It won't be very much use. if your looking at using the greenhouse to grow corals you should have much higher transmission in the area of 95%-97%. a much better resource is anthony's BCOP.
ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds;and to him who knocks the door will be opened.

| a no brainer here (and info you will find when you visit other greenhouse farmers as part of your info gathering in prep to complete your business plan): - you need over 90% total light transmission... and over 90% UV admission (contrary to most habitable space glazings) depending on the species you elect to keep and the seasonal changes relative to position of sun, etc you will need to variously add shade clothes over some tanks or the whole greenhouse at times. You will need a good PAR mete to learn how to finesse this. Please do see the discussions about light meters (PAR/Quantum) by keyword search of this forum or the fast links to them under my "Fav links..." sticky atop this forum

| Anthony, How important is the light transmission through the sides of the greenhouse, not just through the roof?

| it depends on the height of the walls and position of the vats needing light all relative to you latitude and the seasonal position of the sun in the sky. Some things make for longer shadows than others such as northern lats, higher GH walls, lower vats, late seasons. You need to solve this problem on a case by case basis. And frankly, avoid solid GH walls IMO.
