Hello!

I am getting ready to toss the powerheads and set up the CL manifold on a 125 AGA reef ready aquarium!

I plan on having 12 ports/outlets and the external pump will be seperate from the return/sump pump.

My question is about a specific pump. Do you think the Squence Hammerhead will be too much pump for a tank housing mostly LPS?

I done the math and it seemed like the Dart would be too small and the Baraccuda is only about $30 less than the Hammerhead but will that pump be too much?

Thanks!

I am also intersted in this idea, is there a rule for how many ports? and if my returns are 1" should the ports be 3/4" for more velocity?

Current Tanks: 240 reef room divider connected to 1000 gallon refugium in basement

There are many such rules of thumb about such things. These should be thought of as guidelines.

Some include:
1. 20x water flow is a minimum, 30x - 40x more optimal. This is necessary to keep solids suspended.
2. Approximately 400 GPH per nozzle is good.
3. About 1 nozzle per every 10 gallons of water. Note that this gives Anthony's recommendation of 40x flow.

Another relevant piece of advice - go check out Steven Pro's forum for his current (March) rant of the month. It discussed consideration of specific coral species as a point of view for determining flow requirements. At least I THINK it is his current rant. Also, and maybe more interesting, is Chris Jury's perspective on this in this current Reefkeeping.com article.

That said, having looking into the flow rate of the Barracuda (4500 GPH) and Hammerhead (5800 GPH), I'd say that I'd pick the Barracuda. Also, if the pump is the sump retun pump, then this is NOT a closed loop. Rather, I would recommend installing it as a real closed loop and using something like a Mag 9.5 or Mag 12 as a sump return pump.

The sequence hammerhead would be a great pump for your appllication.  Plumb it up with 2" piping and you will deliver some crazy flow to your tank.  What size are the holes drilled for the closed loop?

outstanding input... especially Paul. Kudos

To all... please do be sure (please) to check out the list of "Fav links..." stickied atop my forum. Most all topics are covered in detail and alphabetically.

This question has indeed been detailed there and then some... plus threads with examples notated by tank/plumbing sized. It can't get any easier my friends (without being enabled )

Also... we recently have had a discussion in this forum about Sequence Hammerheads including mine that I run on a 120.

Do make (great) use fo the Internet and search tool functions (this site, google, etc)... there is so much free information to be had.
