a good query from an aquarist in mt em's... posted here for discussion:

Question:   Quick question, what are your thought on reusing sand for a DSB? A friend has a DSB that is a few years old that I could get to use on a new set up.  Is this a good idea?  Is there something to look for as a deciding factor?

Reply: it's most always a terrible idea. Very few people truly maintain live sand with adequate water flow to prevent it from becoming polluted in time. And sand is so relatively cheap to buy... its not worth re-using IMO. Especially considering your time fighting hair algae if we're wrong about the (good) health of a given old sand bed.
