Hi Anthony: First off I wanted to know if you are friendly with a fellow by the name of Mitch Carlson? Just curious as I was at a reef conference meeting this past Sunday when he gave a talk about "Parasites/Pest in Reef Tanks". Anyway, when he got to the section about "PEST" he had your picture right below the heading. Knowing you we all had a good laugh and I had the feeling that he & you were friendly or else why would he do something like that?

Now the question? What type of photo period do you recommend for a refugium? Some say to light it only at night after the tank lights go out while others say to light it 24/7. What would be best for nutrient export? I am running a 30 gal refuge with a combination of Uva, Gracillaria, & Chatomorpha with no other crittes in there except for the DSB (5") fauna.

As always thanks for your help & I will see you in March at NERAC on LI.

Steve

ah, yes... a good friend and a wonderful fellow! I'll be visiting the Omaha club in February in fact

As for the refugium, this one is a simple one... do run its' photoperiod opposite of the display, but its moot whether you run it 24/7 or not. Frankly... I believe there are very few if any significant benefits to running the lamps 24/7 and really it justs wastes more electricty. Plus, most all macroalgae and plants that you will likely keep will actually suffer in time from the lack of a day-night cycle (period of respiration).

Just keep the refugium lights on opposite with a normal 12/12 photoperiod and enjoy higher O2 in the tank, better calcification, and more stable pH for it.

Yes he was very entertaining & I suspected as much!

Thanks for the lighting info & I was actually thinking about going back to the 12/12 vs the 24/7 schedule.

Best,

Steve
