My corals have not been doing well for the past 3 months or so. I thought is was due to changing my lights from MH to LED's, but problems have persisted. I tested the water and had Calcium 600, Alk 15. I stopped dosing and have been doing 20-25% water changes each month. I tested the water last night and Alk is still 15. Tested salinity with refractometer and is 34 ppt.

How can I lower my Alk?

Thanks

Troy

Hey Troy,

Have you double checked the reading with a second test kit? Have you tested a freshly made up batch of saltwater?

Normally I would recommend water changes, but if the alk is high with the new water it will not help bring the levels down.

Make sure any of the other additives/supplements you are dosing won't raise the alk as well.

I am going to make up a gallon of salt water and test it to see what the alk is. I am also going to borrow a friends test kit (a different brand) and retest the water.

Thanks for the ideas

I know that certain additives will raise ALK while intended to do ther things. Aquavitro 8.4 for example will raise alk while intended to raise pH. Water changes should lower the Alk.
