I currently have two firefish, one red and one purple, in separate tanks. I want to know if it would be possible to put them together, The purple is currently in my 75 gallon display tank where my red used to live but is now in a 29 gallon tank. The red used to be part of a pair, and seemed to be the dominant one, but its partner had died. I'd tried to pair the purple up too, but it didn't seem to work out and the much larger more dominant one died in a freak bout of vibrosis. The only other current inhabitant of the 75, where they would both going, is a melanurus wrasse, but they will eventually be many more. Both have coexisted with him, and occasionally he has shown flares of aggression which have not been a problem. Also, when the red firefish had lived in the 75, it lived in the exact same place as where the purple one lives now. I don't know whether or not this could be a problem.

I have seen people mix them, but not sure how they did long term. I would say there is certainly a risk they will fight.
