Hello,

I'm setting up a new tank 120 Gallons. I have a 30 Gal sump with a mag 9.5 and a reef octopus. The tank is new, just installed base rocks and water this past weekend, but after adding the water and shortly after adding reefcrystal salt, I notice an abundant of micro bubbles. The skimmer is going crazy continuously skimming and even though I have bubble traps on the sump and I not notice any, there's a lot of micro bubbles coming out of the returns.

What could cause all of these micro bubbles?

Could it be the salt? I notice it right after adding the salt, but it was shortly after adding water, and I'm using the bulk reef 5 stage RODI.

Help...

Did you predissolve the salt outside of the tank, or did you fill it with water and then dissolve the salt in the tank? Normally we recommend dissolving the salt outside of the tank. If you don't have any sand in the tank and there is no livestock it should be ok, but as soon as you have living organisms in the tank you wouldn't want to do this.

More than likely as the salt is dissolving and the rock is causing the skimmer to go a little bit more crazy. This should settle down once all the salt dissolves and the rock cures. More than likely even with the baffles, the water is flowing too fast for the bubbles to rise to the surface and not get pulled right through. You could try shutting down the return pump for a little bit to let the bubbles settle down, then turn it back on. You may want to play around with turning the skimmer off for a little bit as well to see if that is where the bubbles are coming from or if it is something else.

I had this same problem with my tank. But then i placed some fluval spounges in the baffles and it cut the micro bubbles right out.
