| Hi. I have had an established tank for a while now; however, I recently cleaned the whole tank right down to changing out the stone. I did however, save 40% of the water and added it back in. At the same time I purchased a brand new Ehiem Filter. The tank has been doing well for a couple of weeks. I noticed yesterday that the water is cloudy. At the same time my angle fish passed away. I have had him for years, so I am not sure if it was due to the coudy water condition or he was just old. We do not currently have a water testing kit. My Husband is going to the store to get another one. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

| Hi Pamala, Welcome to the Marine Depot Forums . What you are seeing is a bacterial bloom. When you cleaned out the tank, changed the rocks and put a new filter on the tank you got rid of almost all your beneficial bacteria (the bacteria the breaks down toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrates). More than likely you had (or still have) a spike in the ammonia and nitrite levels within the tank. Unfortunately this was probably the cause of death to your angelfish. Even though you saved the old water, the bacteria that breaks down the fish waste isn't free floating. It clings to surfaces like the biological media in your filter, the walls of the tank, the plants, the gravel, etc...The tank needs to go through the cycling process again. There are a couple of additives you can use to help clear up the water and help seed the tank with beneficial bacteria. You might want to consider using one of them to help out. Seachem makes a product called stability that might work well for you. HTH,
