Well, my tank is almost a month old. I thought everything was going well and I have done two water changed since the beginning. I had a brown algae outbreak about six days ago and tested my water. Everything looked good except my nitrite levels were 1.0+. Do you know of any way to bring this down? I did a water change and cleaned the glass, overflow box, tubes, everything that had the algae except the rock and sand. I have three damsels in the tank along with the five mexican turbos.
I just bought some VHO's and I have my lights on 8 hours a day since the algae outbreak. I'd like to start adding livestock but don't want to with those nitrite levels. I feed once a day, less than a quarter of a frozen cube or a small pinch of freeze dried brine shrimp.

patience is your friend. nitrites should be zero for a few weeks before adding more livestock.
water changes, and time.

How big of water changes should I be doing and how often? I did a 5 gallon water change the other day but am thinking that might not be enough.
My LFS also told me to dose my tank with Seachems stability for the next few days. Looks to me like the brown algae is coming back.

| Ideally a 25% water change should be done about every 2-3 weeks, but in reality I am lucky to do a 25% once a month. But I am working on keeping on track for the water changes. IMO more frequent smaller changes (15-20%) are much better than occasional larger changes changes. The tank will go through a lot of different algae stages over the next year. If you don't have any corals in the tank I would suggest cutting back on the amount of time the lights are on. 3-4 hours will be plenty right now...even keeping them off for a day or two will not be an issue.
