hi Anthony

i recently started a post about lights for fragging - after giving it some thought i think i found a spot in my garden for a GH

but it would have to be a lean too against my garage

so that really gives me 2 options - poly carbonate or glass

which would you go for? are there any big differences in there ability to let UV through?

cheers

Steve

About the glass. If you read Anthony's book he says that glass is not worth it since it blocks too much UV light and energy problems.. I would go with polycarb if it was me.

I don't mean to thread jack but kinda related.

I have heard that acrylic blocks much less light than glass.  Does anyone have any hard numbers on different types of materials and how much light they block?

Actually... common plate glass (typical for glass houses) is inferior to modern plastics for light transmission. Generally, glass admits less than 90% of light while the polycarbonates/Lexan admit over 90%.

Glass is also quite inferior regarding insulation factor. Furthermore... seek twinwall poly sheeting for even better insulation factors.

I think glass is charming and would be quite fine for growing plants, but is just a poor choice for growing corals.
