I've got a 55 gallon tank with a wet/dry sump that ran for years as a SW setup.  It's all been in storage for 5 years and now I want to get it set up again as a FW tank.  I want to use the sump and was wondering what I should use to clean the bio balls up?  Any other suggestions about anything else that might help me along would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the Marine Depot Forums.

You shouldn't have to do anything special...just rinsing them with freshwater should be fine.

What type of freshwater tank are you setting up?

African cichlids would be my first choice.  The bio balls have been in an open bag in a dusty storage area for the past 5 years.... are you sure that just a fresh water rinse would be enough to make them safe?

Unless some type of harmful chemical was getting spilled on them while in storage rinsing with water should be enough.  If they were in a sealed bag that shouldn't be any concern.  BUT if in doubt, throw them out and start with new ones.

I would put them in a large bucket or container and take a hose and powerwash them to get any debris off.  There really shouldn't be anything on them that would be harmful left over from a saltwater tank.

There are lots of different choices in African Cichlids, some with some really nice color.

That's my point, they wer NOT in a sealed bag and in a dusty dirty basement in a plastic shopping bag like you get at the market.  I'm hoping to use them because there are over 300 of them and I suppose that they would be a little pricey to replace if I had to.

If they were rinsed before putting them in a bag and then left in the basement in plastic shopping bags, a good rinse should be fine.  If you really wanted to play it safe you could soak them in a mild bleach solution and then let them dry in the sun for a few days to make sure all the bleach has disappaited (not sure if I spelt that right, LOL).

When I switched a salt water tank of 8 years to a Freshwater, that was in storage in some guys basement for 2 years, all I did was use a pressure washer to clean the tank, sump, and bio balls...with a little scrubbing.  This was about as dirty and dusty as I have seen anything get.

Had the tank setup for probably 4 months in my apartment as freshwater, with no problems.
