Does it hang on the back of the tank or does it sit on the floor with tubes going up to the tank? The more information about the filter you can give us the better we can try to figure out what might be going on.

It sounds like possibly the impeller is not setting correctly and is causing the rattle. You may need to replace it or just try reseating it.

Were all the fish together in the smaller tank initially? Certainly catfish and even suckerfish will sometimes go after goldfish (or other small fish) and if the tank was crowded this might have been some of the problem.

Are the fins red around the edges or just look torn with no redness? It is possible there is actually a bacterial infection and it wasn't the fish fighting or being aggressive towards each other.

My filter/pump is acting funny

Hello I am new to this and I am having problems with my tank. Ok I received a 50 gallon tank from a friend and I have this pump/filter thing in the back that all it does is rattle and make lots of noise. I really don't want to go out and get a whole new pump when this one works great. How do I get it from rattling like this??? Please any comments would really work. I am new with the whole fish collection but I am getting there I have a smaller tank just for 2 beautiful tropical goldfish and the bigger 50 gallon has a cat fish, Sucker fish, and 3 goldfish. I didn't realize that when I had them in a smaller container when I was moving they were eating each other. All my goldfish are missing fins and their pore tails are all beat up and gnawed at. Why is that??? Please any help will be greatly appreciated. I am just trying to get rid of this rattle!!! Thanks, JENNIFER
