Connecticut 2010 Conference

Once again, CTARS will be holding a Conference - the date is Sunday April 25, 2010. Again, it is at The Mohegan Sun Casino. Tickets are available on-line for $15 through December 31, 2009 and parking is FREE. As an added feature this year, you can buy your raffle tickets online as well.

We have a couple of new speakers scheduled to appear - Chris Clough and Vince Rado. Chris is an LED lighting expert and Vince is a Marine Biologist with 40 years of propagating history. Also speaking will be Sanjay Joshi.

We had a full room of vendors. Scheduled to be here are Marco Rocks, Cherry Corals, Reef Koi Corals, Seachem and Wet Thumb Frags just to name a few.

We encourage you to get your tickets early before the price goes up. They make great XMAS stocking stuffers (in case your significant other is wondering what to get you).

This is the largest gathering of reef keepers in the Northeast. We hope to see you here.

MBI: MASM Breeding Initiative

In an effort to encourage captive breeding of marine fishes and Invertebrates, MASM (Marinelife Aquarium Society of Michigan) is happy, and proud, to announce the start of the MASM Breeding Initiative!

MASM would like to involve everyone that is currently breeding as well as those that are interested in giving it a try.

In the next few weeks we will set forth the guidelines for the Breeding Initiative, which will be an ongoing project that is open to anyone that would like to get involved, MASM membership is not a requirement to participate in the MASM Breeding Initiative. The initiative will include a Breeder's Challenge where anyone that is interested in breeding ornamental marine fish or Invertebrates will have the opportunity and support to do so. The Challenge will be an annual project.

We will be organizing a group buy for equipment and materials for the Initiative, and we will have dedicated forums for participants to create breeding logs to document, and to ask questions about, their project.

We are also extremely happy to announce that master breeders Matt Wittenrich, author of “The Complete Illustrated Breeder's Guide to Marine Aquarium Fishes” and Matt Pedersen, MASNA’s 2009 Hobbyist of the Year, have volunteered to act as advisors for the MASM Breeding Initiative and will help answer the more difficult breeding questions posted on the MASM forums.

As a special treat, we will be holding a "Breeder's Workshop" in March 2010 where both Matt Wittenrich and Matt Pedersen will be in town to speak with us! This will be more than a simple lecture. A short lecture and Q&A session from each speaker will be followed by a social gathering where attendees will have plenty of personal, "one on one" time with both Matts. This will be a great opportunity to get individual questions answered by the experts and to share your successes and difficulties experienced through the first several months of the Breeder’s Challenge!

We will have more specific details about the Breeder's Challenge and a date for the Breeder's Workshop in the next few weeks.

MACNA 21 is coming to Atlantic City, NJ September 25-27, 2009

MACNA 21 is coming to Atlantic City, NJ September 25-27, 2009! We've arranged for rooms in the beautiful Sheraton Atlantic City (they're selling fast though so don't delay), which is connected via walkway to the Convention Center. Folks who fly Spirit Air can fly directly into The Atlantic City International Airport and the Philadelphia International Airport is an easy drive to the hotel. We already have half of our current vendor spaces sold and expect the rest of the booths to move quickly.

Ken Feldman
Department of Chemistry, Pennsylvania State University

Ken Feldman was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida, where a proximity to, and an affinity for, the Atlantic Ocean dominated his early years. Days (mis?)spent fishing and snorkeling fostered a keen interest in all things marine, a fascination that continues today. In 2004, that interest finally culminated in a plunge into the marine aquarium hobby, and today he is the caretaker of a 175-gallon reef tank housing a host of fish and corals whose behaviors continue to educate him on a daily basis. He is joined in his aquarium avocation by his daughter Leah, who has been instrumental in aquascaping the tank, as well as in choosing both fish and corals.
Ken has a day job as well – Professor of Chemistry at the Pennsylvania State University. He spends his aquarium down-time focusing on teaching and research in the area of Organic Chemistry. He has published numerous articles on the organic chemistry of molecules found in the reef environment, particularly from sponges. Currently, his research interests include (a) devising the means to synthesize sponge- and coral-derived metabolites that elicit promising chemotherapeutic responses against some cancers and against some immune system malfunctions, and (b) to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which these biological properties are manifest.

Dissolved Organic Carbon: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Ken Feldman, Pennsylvania State University

Tracking the fate of organic carbon through the marine aquarium can provide insight into the role that this essential but often neglected nutrient plays in the successful husbandry of the tank's inhabitants. Photosynthesizing organisms like phytoplankton and the corals shown below produce DOC from inorganic CO2. This DOC, in excess, may contribute to coral mortality as illustrated. Thus, a means for excess DOC removal become paramount for successful aquarium husbandry. Protein skimming plays a major role in this necessary maintenance function. A discussion of acceptable levels of DOC in marine aquaria will follow. The development of a quantitative assay for measuring protein skimmer performance in removing DOC, as illustrated in the graph below, will be described. This latter advance enables (a) assaying the effects of either gas flow velocity or liquid flow velocity on skimmer performance, and (b) direct comparison of different skimmers in terms of their efficiency of DOC removal from aquarium water. Data on all of these points will be presented.

Caribbean expeditions aim to save threatened keystone reef species

SECORE aims to contribute to the conservation of Acropora palmata, by means of annual expedition to the Caribbean. Gametes are collected every year for subsequent fertilization and rearing of offspring.

Several teams, within and outside SECORE, are at this moment working hard to save this keystone species from extinction.

MACNA XX September 5-7, 2008 in Atlanta

We are excited about this year's MACNA conference. We already have Pre-registered and paid as many as most of the total attendance of the first 15 or so MACNAs, so it should be huge. Combine that with a great hotel, great speakers, cheap flights, and the Georgia Aquarium and we have everything to try to get you guys to have a good time while in Atlanta.

The hotel is great, and the room night of $119 can't be beat, it usually is in the $250-300 range. We were able to negotiate pretty well, but rooms are going fast.

There is a lot to do in Atlanta if people come early or bring significant others - CNN, Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, the Children's museum, the world of Coke, and Hooters (hey, I know my audience) is within a 5 minute walk, and MARTA goes from inside the airport to the hotel for $1.75 - so no cab charges. The same MARTA can take you to the Braves, shopping centers, etc. We are also getting together a kids program (popcorn and movies in the hotel) to allow parents to go to the banquet and speakers. We will offer that at cost.

Oh, and the banquet is food by Wolfgang Puck. No open bar like Pittsburgh, but good food inside a great banquet hall inside the largest aquarium in the world with two windows - one toward the largest indoor aquatic exhibit in the world (over 6 million gallons - the size of a football field) that includes four whale sharks and the other one toward the four beluga whales.

Come see half of the Marine Depot crew in Ann Arbor Michigan March 15th. Eric Borneman, Frank Marini, and myself will be joined by Dr. Bruce Carlson of the famous Atlanta Aquarium to do a one day event. I have gone to this show several times as an attendee and spoke at it several more and always thoroughly enjoy myself. I have to say, it is one of my favorite yearly events behind MACNA. They get a decent size crowd for a regional one-day show, but it is still very comfortable and friendly. If you are anywhere in the area, check it out!

Marine Aquarist Courses Online (MACO) has a course on Fish Husbandry starting on April 6th! The course is 6 weeks of full instruction. MACO courses are internet based, with a 2 hour chat session per week. The husbandry course will have the live interactive chats at 6pm Sundays PST (9pm EST).

This class will introduce you into the world of marine fish husbandry, from basic biology and taxonomy, to principles and procedures used to insure that these animals live out long and healthy lives under your care. You'll learn how to select the proper equipment, and be guided on how to set up your system in a way that suits the fish that you've chosen and the environment that you would like to emulate. Most importantly, you'll learn to avoid all the mistakes that are so easily made when learning to keep these amazing animals. The class will cover the tendencies and idiosyncrasies of various families of marine fish, how they interact with each other, and how to keep them together without experiencing the problems that plague so many aquarists. You'll learn how to manage and avoid diseases that commonly infect and often kill so many captive marine fish. Over the years of doing The Talkingreef podcast, one request that kept popping up was the request to have a live call in show. Well we're going to give it a try..

Introducing Talkingreef Live (TRL)
Talkingreef Live will be a live show hosted by myself and Bobby (IReef_IKeeper) and with assitantce and support from Carmie (CarmieJo). It will take place every other Sunday night at 8:00 PM EST (frequency and time not in stone yet) along side the regular Talkingreef Chat. During this show Bobby (IReef_IKeeper) and I will will take your questions, or discuss your topics. You can present questions, or bring up ideas for discussion and we can talk about them and let the audience ring in with their thoughts on the topic. If successful we are planning to do special talk nights with various industry experts, giving you the chance to join us live and ask your question.

During the show, while listening you, will be in a chat room live with everyone. You can present your topics or questions, get added to the queue, join the show, or just hang out and chat with everyone while listening. The shows will be recorded and released as a Talkingreef Live Podcast. These shows will go out in the existing Podcast feed, so everyone will have the chance to listen to them.

There is only one catch. This project is launching on a trial basis. In order for this to be successful we need YOUR participation. Make sure you spread there word and rally all your friends. Without your participation, this show can not succeed.
During this trial period, the team will evaluate the show quality and listener participation to make sure its a valuable resource for everyone.

The first show will be held tomorrow night (9/23/07). This show will be VERY experimental, and may not even get released on the public podcast feed. The idea for this show is to give everyone an idea how the system will work, and let us get an idea how to properly run things.

The show will be hosted at Talkshoe. Make sure you head over there to sign up for a free account. To participate, you can call in from a regular phone (long distance charges may apply), using a VOIP client like Skype or Gizmo Prject, or using the built in ShoePhone client that comes with Talkshoe (all free).

October 21 - Connecticut Area Reef Society Presents

The Connecticut Area Reef Society will be holding their next regularly scheduled meeting on Sunday, October 21, 2007.

It will be at Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut, 490 Jefferson Ave. , New London, CT 06320. The doors will open at 2 PM with the lecture beginning at 3 PM.

Admission is free with your 2007 or 2008 CTARS membership card. Guests are $5.00.

This month will feature "Keeping Acro’s" by Joe Burger. Joe is a long time aquarist and the September 2002 “Tank of the Month” winner in “Reefkeeping” Magazine.

It will be followed by our regular raflle and big item raffle. This month big raffle item is a Hanna Phosphate Low Range Meter (with reagents). Tickets are only $5.
