They require less water flow, can be upright (hence bucket DSBs), require no light and little maintenance and have a primary purpose of natural nitrate reduction (NNR). Most cost less than $20 to employ.

DSBs are deep sand beds of various depth kept in illuminated vessels such as, but not limited to, displays and refugia. They are easily used and easily abused. Please understand their many benefits and limitations very well before employing one. If you can forgive a shameless and self-serving plug for my 2003 book, "Reef Invertebrates" (see reviews on Amazon.com and message board feedback and judge for yourself)... in it you will find very extensive coverage of this topic longer and more concise than any brief message board p[osts can do. Nearly 1/4 of the 400 page book is dedicated to plants, algae, refugia and living substrate issues revolving around DSBs.

http://www.marinedepot.com/FORUMS/Topic23480-13-1.aspx?Highlight=RDSB curved bulkhead for RDSB bucket/wells 1.26.06

http://www.marinedepot.com/FORUMS/Topic23306-13-1.aspx?Highlight=RDSB RDSB for large systems 1.25.06

http://www.marinedepot.com/FORUMS/Topic22357-13-1.aspx refugium versus RDSB 1.21.06

http://www.marinedepot.com/FORUMS/Topic20039-13-1.aspx RDSB 1.13.06 * hot topic

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=595109 Remote deep sand beds (RDSB) - 2005
