Hi to everyone i only sighned up and am starting to build a 7ft long 2ft wide 2ft high tank iam using a jewel rio 400 as a sump i been keeping marines 3 years (in the rio 400) ive loads of questions regarding lighting and setting up sump.i only kept a fiew fish and some hardy corals in my last tank so i want this tank to look like a reef am i posting my questions in the rite spot?

Re: the videos... I have been chatting with folks recently about making professional tutorials to distribute. I'm so tired of a decade of really poor quality hobby venue quality videos. I'm delighted to do these for free (though many dont even ask my permission to distribute or sell the videos!)... but I would like to see better editing for more effective communication. One US club stamped CDs of one of my lectures... had typos on the label and the TOC(!) and then tried selling them without ever even asking me for permission. Oi! That's the kind of thing I'd really like to avoid :p

Hello from Ireland !

Just got the book on Coral prop, Couldn't wait for the new addition.

Looking to be the first in Ireland with a PT for coral Prop. Starting a Live rock and coral import business forst to see the market demand. Love your book and your work in the hobby.

Can I ask what Video's you have available as another person has mentioned? I have seen you on reef videos - it this what the person is refering to?

I finally decided to visit PMAS on Dec 2nd at the Radisson for the first time to check it out. Your presentation was very knowledgable and inspiring. All I needed was a good reason to setup more tanks. Now I have a rose anemone and an Aiptasia tank setup.

I was reading some of your articles ,watching your videos ,reading your book Ok ,my question you had said about naTURAL SUNLIGHT ETC ,DID YOU EVER HEAR OF A lighttube and could one be employed in such a way as to have the farm in your house ,basement where the temp would be controlled easier? ty for your time Don Biggs Pennsylvania

heehee... all good And no worries, ideed there are many fine reef communities with different flavors and benfits to enjoy. Do use each and all that you can for their unique merits. Hi Anthony,

It was great to meet you last weekend at SaltwaterU, looking forward to reading your posts here. You may be pleased to know that the 7 hour drive home Sunday was spent brainstorming business ideas and culminated with a decent start on a real business plan, thanks to the inspiration from yourself and others over the weekend. Yesterday and today I've worked on it even more and started gathering information on greenhouses and geothermal temperature control. I'm no longer thinking too small and hoping to "someday" have a coral prop business, but looking at a 3yr-5yr-10yr plan and determined to make it happen. Ordered subscriptions to trade journals, and making reservations and travel arrangements to attend MACNA. Probably convinced one LFS I'm a raving lunatic by asking for (and getting, for free of course) all the aiptasia they cared to pull out of their tanks.

Now if I can just stay this focused and enthusiastic for the long term!

Thank you for your kind words Ron. Indeed, wherever we all (hobbyists at large) go, surely we will benefit from a clear focus on information exchange. I am certain and passionate that we have that here too. MD has "walked the walk" for a very long time in providing information, articles and sound advice to aquarists. And they were quite clear with us too before expanding the board that this was before and will continue to be a liberal place to discuss the hobby (indeed, like most message boards and as it should be). But I think any concerns that a few folks had about the "commercial" support of this forum were sent out the door from day one. Here we talk about products sold and not sold by MD. And products get discussed with frank honestly based on their merit... period. Not many other commercial folks would tolerate that. Yet MD knows that good business is critically dependant on the long term success of the hobbyists! Censoring posts, pulling punches on product recommendations and showing bias (for or against) is not good for MD or the hobby at large. It handicaps participation and ultimately the very size of the market by the (waning) success of the participants. Yet the MD folks really have done a fab job IMO of investing in the hobby for all the right reasons (commercial and non-commercial alike). Kudos to them.

And if anyone is interested in the flavor of this discussion as it relates to good business and helping the hobby grow through good business... do check out my thread on "Aquarium Business" over at Reefcentral.com (or see it linked/listed under "discussions" in my list of "Fav links..." stickied atop this forum.

PS - did you also notice that this forum does not censor linking to other forums (as per my RC reference above)? I do wish all BBs did that in the purest spirit of information exchange as well as allowing healthy competition to hone the best of the best for the good of all based on their merit. If is the old saying... Good competition is good for business, and bad competition is bad for business.

What we all need are more, good merchants, BBs, LFS, etc to support and expand the hobby and industry for all.

I wish you a happy productive and sensorship free environment in which you can express your ideas without restriction and promote techniques and ideas for coral/marine aquarium husbandry that are in line with your very high moral ethical and intellectual standards. It takes a bold crew to slip away from a restrictive environment and you have my respect and support. heheee... true. I am an equal opportunity club lover ACtually... I'm a dedicated hobby club nerd when it comes to vistits, foundings, advice, etc

I am very much looking forward to seeing y'all in LI in March. I'll be in Philly the night before with Julian as I recall and we will drive in to NY Sat. I plan to stay for several days longer to visit and tank tour, photograph, etc

I think CO is on the horizon too I really love CO.. even if we have to go through it to get to the Superbowl today (Go Steelers! ) Seriously, though, I have many dear friends there indeed. And I truly love Ocean Journey... what a fab lil public aquarium over their by Invesco field.
