I wanted to order the Invertebrate zoology from Amazon, only to find a super cheap Europe version (€62 or $75) in a local book shop! Unfortunately, time and money are scarse, and I'm unable to hook up. Perhaps later.

Look at it this way, it is rather like auditing a course. There are no exams for credit.

It would be actually cool if we had a way to check our progress in edification So some test or quiz from time to time would be beneficial. The results would be just for us, so F would not ba such a big deal, right ?

I would love to take this course, however, I am an engineer and the only biology labs that I have taken are in microbiology, pathology, and immunology.

Given that the prerequisite is "Introductory Biology or sufficient ability and desire to be able to go to references and find out terms," it sounds like you're qualified.

Ok here is a funny piece of information--- I posted little adds for the course on several reef forum sites including RC, but at RC I asked people to PM me or email me for information. I had a couple of hits then somebody inquired why I didn't just post the information on the forum. So I did (just the link to Dr. Ron's web page) The forum was quickly closed and the link was switched to yahoo.com. I see why you guys left. My next project is to see if I can get yahoo.com to have a link for the on line course.

Yea Reef Central is like that. They kicked me off their boards because I listed my personal e-mail address at the bottom of my posts like I have here, and they took my e-mail address out of my member info, and if a person clicks on my info to try to contact me it says that I don't want to be contacted.

Yeah, that's why I feel that this class is such a bargain especially since the topic is a passion/hobby to me.

Post-college, I feel that most courses, at least for my occupation, are a scam.

For the last couple of jobs I was required to take one class related to my field every six months. These courses usually cost between $1K and $2K plus hotel and travel (luckily work paid for it). With the exception of one class, it usually entailed somebody regurgitating the course book and answering any questions with B.S. The only rewarding class was one in which the lecturer was willing to give an honest answer of "I don't know, but I will try to find out" or "Let's run an experiment and see what happens."

In my latest job I been able to avoid taking any classes relating to my field and life is good. I still take classes now and then, just not related to work. But, even continuing education courses at Emery (up the street from me) are still more expensive and many times "light" on the course material.... I want to be challenged, dammit.

After reading this thread the other day I had the weirdest dream that Dr. Ron decided to hold his class at this school that looked an awful lot like Hogwarts from the Harry Potter books... in a room that looked something like Professor Snape's except with more microscopes and fewer caldrons.

I have spent much time in the library researching the variety of life in my aquarium with varying success. So, of course, I am very interested in the course material, but I was wondering if this would be over my head. I have no problem looking up terms and reading twenty-five pages per day is very reasonable, but basically it boils down to if this course allows for us hacks to be able to ask stupid questions that we can't figure out.

I will be pursuing college affiliation and credit for these courses, but that is in the future. This is just for your edification.

Actually, I prefer it this way, too. It makes the course cheaper and it makes it much less of a paperwork hassle. Howsoever, as it is a time consuming and "heavy" class, it would be nice to be able to give some real college-level credit for it.
