I have a 75 gallon tank that I would like to add about 1/2" to a 3/4" of an inch of substrate to it. What type is ok to add? Will my tank levels be thrown off if i add new substrate? I currently have about 3/4" of bedding and would like to get it up to 1"-1-1/2". Any suggestions.

Thanks

I would try to match what you currently have in the tank (grain size).  I would suggest slowly over a few weeks adding the sand so you don't suffocate any life under the new sand.

I will be relocating the tank in a few months. I was wondering if it was ok to use live sand or a dry sand. I will be using the same grain size, so that wont be an issue. I was needing clarification on what type of sand to add - dry or live.

Either will be fine.  I have added both types to existing tanks without any issues.

Could problems occur when using crushed coral as a substrate. I upgraded from a 55g to a 75g, when doing so i add crushed coral to make up the difference of lost sand bed depth. Does crushed coral aid in holding of debris on the sand bed. What is the required number of clean up crew for a 75g?

Yes it can make a difference.  Sand will be finer (obviously, LOL) and therefore not have as much pore space between the grains and not allowing for the build up of larger particles between them.  With a larger pore space (crushed coral), more detritus can build up between the pores.

Now when you mix sand and crushed coral I am not 100% what effect that will have on the ability of the sandbed to function properly, but I believe you are trying to acheive a more uniform grain size for optimal conditions in the sand.

The clean up crew will really depend on what exactly you go with.  If you go with one of the "premade" packages, I would start with one of the smaller packages found on most livestock websites and add more critters later if needed.

Should i then try to get rid of the crushed coral (as much as i can) and replace it with uniform grain size? Any recommendations on type of substrate to use?

That is a hard one to say, if it were my tank I would probably look at getting rid of the crushed coral as long as it wasn't going to make me have to tear down the tank.  If it was an easy fix I would certainly get as much of the crushed coral out.

I like the Caribsea Aragamax sugar sized oolitic sand.  Nice bright white and a good sized sand.
