Reefski (4/28/2008) do you have to shade to cut down on the light intensity?Last summer, I used a 30% shade cloth and still have some bleaching issues with stony corals. I will use it again perhaps along with some lighting films to further cut back on the light as well as change its color.

xroads (4/30/2008) Can you elaborate on what you are doing with anemones.I just bought one from a local hobbyist/friend to see how well it does in the greenhouse environment. Did you have a specific question?

| Hi Steve, I was wondering if you were working on propagation techniques, be it trying to get them to split on their own more often, or slicing. Thx Craig

xroads (5/1/2008) I was wondering if you were working on propagation techniques, be it trying to get them to split on their own more often, or slicing.I have done both. I have cut them in half as well as encouraged them to split on their own with large water changes. I the greenhouse, I will likely be doing only cutting because of the practical problems with doing "large" water changes routinely on multiple 600 gallon systems.

| Take this for whats worth as I have not tested this but I plan to this summer. With larger tanks it does cost a lot to do water changes so I am going to try to put the anemones in a reaceway tank above the big tank. It will have a pump curculating water to it from the main sump but I will also use it to introduce the water from topoff and water changes. I was not going to top off with chemicals, just RO/DI water. The thought is that the regular stressings will cause enough stress to make them split. I can then use carbon in the return to the sump to remove any toxins that may be produced. Faz

| Hi Steven - First off, thank you for sharing your experiences on this forum. I, like many others, wish to start my own Aquaculture Farm. I am still in the process of research and finalizing my Business Plan plus I am hoping to visit a facility next week where the owner will look over my plan with me, sharing his advice. One thing I've been having trouble figuring out is the tax issue. As you can guess I'd like the tax dept to recognize my business as algricultural for tax breaks. My one issue is that I am going to lease a warehouse (Not going to do a greenhouse) for about two years which probably will not be zoned for agriculture, before taking a permanent plunge into a facility on my future residence. So, for now, property tax isn't going to be a bonus but I'm wondering what it took (Or what you had to do) for your business to be considered agriculture? Thanks! Christian

My greenhouse operation is not considered agriculture or aquaculture. I rolled it under my existing aquarium sales, installation, and maintenance business. When I formed my own company, I had the accountant keeps it description sufficiently generic so that I coud expand or change the focus to most anything aquarium related.

Thank you for answering, I am most likely going to get a tax consultant on the matter. A couple more questions for you: Are you purchasing Calcium Hydroxide from Mississippi Lime? If so what brand are you buying as I see they now have quite a few offered? Also, do you happen to know what their minimum order is? Looking at the tables, and guessing that you've messed with the corals some... how is your back feeling? I will be using the rubbermaid stock tanks, but will have them up on short tables to keep my back a little straighter. Even at 26 years of age I worry about such things. I am tossing the idea of either doing what looks like you did... a DSB in each of the tanks, but have one of the tanks with rock. It is that or flip it around and keep a single DSB in one tank and keep rocks in the rest of the tanks. The difference between you and I is that I will have the tanks connected to each other in "systems". So aside from having tank being on it's own, the systems include having two sumps.. one being a rock or sand bin, and the other most likely a refugium. The link for the eggcrate supplier you are using is dead. By chance, do you know the name of the company that supplies it? Many thanks Steven!
